Braving Uncertainty
Jim Ewing started his professional life as a rocket scientist, but it soon became evident that his real passion was for people. He saw that life is about navigating change - braving uncertainty, living well at our ‘learning edge’.
He set out to develop a way to support others, “a conversational, casual, no-frills and no-waiting intervention to be a first responder for individuals and for groups when steep change and life redesign come calling”.
Over time he grew a successful consulting business, working with companies and organisations innovating through change or tackling ‘wicked’ problems. He designed a family of maps to support this work - simple frameworks for transformative conversations for use with individuals, groups, communities, organisations.
In “Braving Uncertainty” Jim introduces the maps and the thinking that lies behind each of them, plus the conversational craft that brings them all to life.
“Braving Uncertainty” was published on 21st July 2024, and is also available exclusively from our publisher Triarchy Press as a paperback and as a PDF.
“I was introduced to the maps and tools in this book over 10 years ago and I continue to find them extremely practical and useful for the small and large changes I have encountered.
“I have used them to plan and execute multi-year strategies as well as thinking through short term challenges growing a multinational business. I have also found them helpful when thinking through personal change.
“The tools reveal surprising insights and ideas to keep moving in uncertain times, they make it possible to understand what is holding us back and how to confront our fears when working at, and beyond, the edge of our comfort zone.”

“I have used the tools described in this book to support bringing three very different teams together to create a single urgent care service. When things were tough and as a leadership team we were struggling to find hope, the Impacto framework really helped us to take stock and create shared common purpose.
“In the years leading up to this transformation work, much had been left unsaid, conflict had gnawed away between the different factions. Using the principles set out in TransforMAP and then the Implemento framework we managed to unlock conversations and get into shared, transformative action. All underpinned, of course, by good listening, hope and courage from the many members of the team.”
